Acrylic beds take centre stage in West End production   A Devon based manufacturer’s acrylic products are taking centre stage in an English National Opera West End production which opened last week.   Producers, of the major new operatic staging of Handel’s masterpiece ‘Messiah’, needed 48 clear beds as props for the whole chorus to perform on in the ‘resurrection’ scene in act three.   Tanya Bowd, prop supervisor for the production team, turned to Luminati Waycon, bespoke acrylic fabricators and manufacturers based near Ivybridge, Plymouth to provide the 48 crystal clear acrylic beds for the performers.   Tanya says; “the acrylic bed construction is just perfect as it doesn’t clutter the stage and it enabled the set designers and lighting engineers to perfect the overall required atmosphere and look.”   Luminati Waycon are specialists in display cases, frames and cabinets and make a range of acrylic furniture and lifestyle products – but up until now this has not included beds.   “This has been one of our more unusual commissions”, comments Luminati Waycon director Steve Senior, “We were able to produce technical drawings from a brief from the set designers. Each bed is 190cm in length and 67cm wide and made from acrylic. They all had to be strong and safe enough for members of the chorus to lie and sit on.”
